Frequently asked questions

See below some of the most frequently asked questions on our MyCareFone Home Alarm service.

MyCareFone Home Alarm is a personal home SOS alarm service, monitored 24×7 by a professional Grade A1 alarm monitoring company.

The MyCareFone Home Alarm runs on the 4G mobile networks. We use either Telstra Wholesale or Optus SIM cards (depending on your coverage and requirements).

Press the SOS button on the base unit, or your paired Pendant/Pull Cord to initiate an SOS alarm to our 24×7 monitoring centre, and talk to a trained operator through the speaker and microphone on the base unit. They will calmly discuss your situation and dispatch emergency services to your address if required, and/or notify your nominated emergency contacts.

The service includes as standard a MyCareFone Home Alarm 4G base unit + one (1) low-power RF Pendant device – choose from a Wristband Pendant or a Lanyard Pendant.

Additional RF devices are available as a separate purchase, including a Pull Cord device.

See our Pricing section for our latest plans, inclusions and Critical Information Summaries.

Yes, each MyCareFone Home Alarm can have up to nine (9) of each type of low-power RF device paired to the base unit.

Typically for a two resident household, customers choose to have one wearable pendant per person (Wristband Pendant or Lanyard Pendant), and a Pull Cord in the bathroom.

The MyCareFone service includes one (1) RF device as standard. Additional RF devices can be purchased during the initial order of the service, or later down the track*. Additional pendant prices are outlined in the Pricing section.

*Postage and handling fees apply.

No, MyCareFone does not currently offer a fall detector pendant for the Home Alarm service.

For customers that require fall detection, we recommend looking at our SOS Watch service.

The MyCareFone Home Alarm is designed as an in-home alarm system.

While low-power RF devices can work up to 50m away from the base unit, and are designed to re-connect automatically if they are taken away from the base unit for short periods of time*, we recommend that all RF devices remain within range of the base unit at all times.

For a service that increases safety at home and while out and about, take a look at our SOS Watch service.

*Automatic RF device re-connection is not guaranteed. In some instances the RF device can require a single press of the SOS button once it is in range of the base unit, and in rare cases the base unit may need to be reset.

Yes, the MyCareFone low-power RF pendants have an IP68 rating. This means they are water resistant in fresh water to a maximum depth of 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, and perfectly suitable to wearing in the shower.

The powerful built-in microphone and speaker can generally be heard from most areas of a typical retirement villa or unit (with internal doors open).

If our monitoring centre cannot establish voice contact through the base unit, they will first try to contact you on your nominated contact numbers (mobile or landline). If there is still no contact, then they will treat it as an emergency and dispatch an ambulance to your home. They will then notify your nominated friends or family contacts.

This procedure is in place to ensure that even if you are incapable of getting to the base unit to speak with the operator, or reach your mobile phone, you will still receive assistance from emergency services.

The MyCareFone Home Alarm is designed with network resilience in mind. If the base unit experiences a mobile network outage with its service carrier network (Optus or Telstra Wholesale), it will automatically switch to any available alternate carrier network (Optus/Telstra/Vodafone) and attempt an emergency call to Triple Zero (000), as a failover to the myhomefone dual Grade A1 monitoring centres.

It is important to note that in these instances, the user will go straight through to Triple Zero (000) and bypass the myhomefone monitoring centre. Triple Zero (000) have access to the government-regulated IPND database which stores the registered service address, and a direct phone number for the myhomefone monitoring centre. This allows Triple Zero (000) to dispatch emergency services to the registered service address, and contact the myhomefone monitoring centre for additional information if required.

Triple Zero (000) failover (also known as emergency “camp-on”), while mandated for all mobile phones in Australia, is not mandatory for personal emergency response services and devices. We believe it should be, which is why MyCareFone includes it.

MyCareFone Home Alarm has an internal backup battery of 3000mAh, which continues to power the base unit up to 24 hours (on standby) during a power outage.

Funding for a home alarm service* may be available through the Support at Home Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme or the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).

Your care provider will need to confirm your eligibility and available funding before arranging the service directly with myhomefone. They’ll also explain what’s covered and whether you’ll need to contribute towards the cost.
*Funding information relates to standalone alarm services. Home phone and Wi-Fi services are separate.

MyCareFone monitoring is supported by two monitoring centres, each graded A1. This is the highest monitoring centre grading available in Australia (AS 2201.2). The Grade A1 standard covers the centre’s construction, building services, equipment and operating standards, including alarm response times.

Having two centres provides additional resilience to support continuity of monitoring if one location experiences a disruption.
